⛔ Tips to Make Your Email Get Read

Subject line matters: Use “URGENT: Please support ban on unregulated kratom” or “Constituent concern: dangerous kratom sales.” Avoid generic subjects.
Identify yourself: Include your full name and address so they know you're a constituent.
Keep it short: Legislators' staff skim. One page max. Bullet points help.
Tell a personal story: If you or someone you know has been harmed, share it briefly. Personal stories stick.
Cite evidence – briefly: Mention FDA warnings, CDC death data, poison center calls. Link to our evidence pages.
Be clear about what you want: “I urge you to co-sponsor/introduce legislation to ban the retail sale of kratom.” or “Please vote NO on industry-backed KCPA bills.”
Be polite but firm: Angry emails get ignored. Respectful passion gets attention.

I am writing to urge you to take action against the unregulated sale of kratom in our state. Kratom is a psychoactive substance sold in gas stations and vape shops, often marketed as a "natural supplement." But the FDA has issued repeated warnings: kratom is not approved for any medical use, has been linked to liver failure, seizures, and addiction, and is associated with hundreds of overdose deaths nationwide. Just last year, poison control centers received over 1,600 kratom-related calls – including 149 involving children. The industry claims that so-called "Kratom Consumer Protection Acts" will make the product safe. But those bills are written by the industry itself and do nothing to prevent addiction or warn consumers about opioid-like withdrawal. They are a smokescreen to keep profits flowing. ⛔ Building a Persuasive Argument – Make It Personal

You're not just a constituent – you're a parent, a neighbor, a community member. Start by introducing yourself that way. “I'm a mother of two who shops at the same gas station where kratom is sold next to the candy.” Legislators remember people, not issues.
Share what you've seen in your own town. Point to the vape shop on Main Street, the gas station by the school, the friend whose kid ended up in the ER. Local details make it impossible to dismiss as “some other community's problem.”
Frame it as protection, not politics. You're not asking for a partisan fight – you're asking them to protect the kids on their street, the families in their district, the first responders who keep getting called to the same addresses.
Use the evidence – but connect it to people. Don't just cite “1,645 poison control calls.” Say: “That's 1,645 families – 149 of them with children under six – who had to watch someone they love seize, vomit, or stop breathing because of something sold legally down the road.”
Emphasize the industry's deception, and how it affects your neighbors. “They're funding fake science and lobbying against warnings – while the dad next door has no idea his teenager bought an opioid at a vape shop.”
Challenge “regulation not prohibition” with your own reality. “You're asking me to trust that an industry which hides liver failure and death will regulate itself? I'm asking you to trust the parents who've already buried their children.”
Bring it home with one clear image. “The same kratom sold in our gas stations is showing up in our ERs, our poison center logs, and our obituaries. I don't want to read another one.”
End with what you want – and why it matters to you personally. “Please vote to ban retail kratom. Do it for the kids on the bus my daughter rides. Do it so no other parent has to learn about this the way I did.”
